Reading and Phonics

Our Approach to the Teaching of Phonics

Read, Write, Inc – Phonics Schemes

At Aycliffe Village Primary School, phonics is taught through the use of the Read, Write, Inc. (RWInc.) Programme. Children are assessed regularly, and grouped according to the sounds they know, and their level of fluency.

Reading Schemes

At Aycliffe Village Primary School we use a RWInc book bags to compliment the teaching of phonics in school. Once children have progressed through this programme they go on to access books from the Oxford Reading Tree which are banded to ensure progression of vocabulary and fluency.

Reading Plus

Children from Y6 have access to Reading Plus, again this is an online resource which can be access from home or in school. Built on decades of research, Reading Plus assesses efficiency, and also measures and increases motivation and comprehension. The program allows students to practice at their own pace and uses adaptive technology in a truly meaningful way.

Reading for Enjoyment

We believe passionately that every child should learn to read. We want our children to leave primary school with a confidence and love of reading. We understand that it is essential that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, to support them in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education and beyond.

Our Approach to the Teaching of Reading

Over the course of the year, the children will listen to a range of stories and poems, learning to join in with repeated phrases, for example,  in traditional tales and also sharing information in non-fiction books.  At Aycliffe Village Primary School, teachers use their subject knowledge to link books to other areas of the curriculum where this is appropriate and  develop a range of reading and writing activities for the children to explore and enjoy.

You can help your child by making sure they bring their book bag into school every day and by listening to them read at home. If you have any questions, or require any support with this, then please ask your child’s class teacher.

Our Approach to the Teaching of Spellings

Since September 2021 spelling is taught through RWInc throughout school initially in RWINc phonic sessions and then from Y2 – Y6 following the RWINc spelling programme. Although the teaching of phoneme-grapheme correspondence underpins this programme, it also develops children’s knowledge of word families, how suffixes impact upon root words, and provides mnemonics to remember the trickiest spellings.

The teaching revolves around instruction (with the help of online alien characters), partner and group practice, and competitive group challenges that help children commit new words to memory.
